Teacher’s Guide and Questions for the book “The Fighter”
The questions in the document below provide some possibilities for exploring some topics that are relevant to Year 9 students who have read the book ‘The Fighter’ by Ken Vogal. While the book was written with Year 9 in mind older students will probably enjoy the read as well. A few of the questions may be answered easily and from the book, while others are thought questions which could involve Bible study and research, and the teacher would need to pray for guidance in preparing for the discussion. Some questions could become the basis for oral or written classroom activities. There are good opportunities for higher order thinking of application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Ask God to give you creative ideas of sharing HIS story with the students under your care.
The Fighter
This is a story of the growing up and teenage years of Paul Piari which is quite remarkable, for although he grew up in a Papua New Guinea village before any white missionary had introduced the story of Jesus and God, Piari’s father Nun had an understanding and respect for a great, good eternal God who lived in the land of mystery – the God who held that life was sacred; the God whose law said that people should not kill each other. However, the young boy gained village fame for his warrior skills, and his ability to fight and kill. Thus we see the stage set for a Great Controversy theme in the life of this growing lad. Where will he put His allegiance? Who will direct His life? The story traces the struggles that Piari faced, and in many ways it reflects the struggle that all young people face as they are confronted with choices in life, including the ultimate choice of choosing to follow God, or allowing their lives to be controlled by the forces of evil.
